Harvey Comes to Texas

Harvey Comes to Texas
Tom Haupt

9-2-2017

All was calm and sun was blazing
Until the moon began the hazing.
We watched the tube with speculation
Predicting randomly Harvey’s direction

Then it came, the eye near Corpus
That meant several miles west of us.
Knuckle down, and bear the bands
Some rain is coming to wet the lands

It came in quietly, with little stir
Rain hitting softly, like a kitten pur.
But then it stuck and just kept coming
Turning up the volume and started pouring.

Day 2 a deluge, flooding in the streets
Nothing new to our city, this we can still meet.
But it kept coming, and coming in hard
It just never stopped and water in the yard.

Ok Harvey, Poseidon’s other son,
Dropping so much water on everyone.
Can you ease up? Families embracing each other
Turn to see their dreams filling up with water

Good to see you safe, with thoughts and prayers,
Not much comfort as your world is a blur.
Homes inundated, our streets now rivers,
People in shelters, shaking off shivers.

Saviors in blue collars, caring Texan hands,
Reaching out in times of need for their fellow man.
Boats, water, food, and first responders
No one just stands, no one ponders.

Just time to turn it on and act
Grab whatever and pay the pact.
Get out there and do whatever you can,
Because….we are Texan.

Twenty-four seven the rescues continue
Fearful subjects and tired saviors, tired crew
Plucking lives from the murky shallows
That used to be our blessed burroughs.

Do not despair for us, but watch what ensues
There is a strength that will amaze you.
We will strap up our laces, gloves on our hands.
We will rebuild, make it better…We are Texans!

We will lick our wounds clean and lift our fellow man,
Find homes for our homeless and united we will stand.
We will feed our hungry, give love to our sisters and brothers,
Even those we haven’t met… We will stand with one another.

We will cry together, til tears are gone,
We will then laugh, have a beer, and move on.
There is work to be done, in our streets, in our towers,
Each of us a minor force, but together a force of power.

We are knocked down, in the mud, in the pit.
But we are used to hard work, dealing with all of it.
We will embrace each other and offer our hands,
We will lift each other and rebuild….because we are TEXANS!
